Our neighbouring portal ornitho.pl went online 10 years ago - congratulations and thank you for the great work that the OTOP - BirdLife Poland team has done: Ornitho.pl has developed into the largest data source for birds in Poland during this time and now includes almost 12 million observations!

Incidentally, the secret "heraldic bird" of ornitho.pl is the White-crowned Wheatear: a few days after the launch of the portal - on 12 May 2015 - it was discovered in the village of Winduga near Włocławek. Fascinated, the observer called OTOP, two ornithologists travelled there directly, were able to confirm the bird and reported it on ornitho.pl - the first observation for Poland! The pretty wheatear stayed until 18 May and attracted observers from all over the country and beyond. That's why a White-crowned Wheatear adorns the shoulder bag that OTOP designed with artist Agnieszka Więckowska to mark the anniversary. It is available from the OTOP shop for around 12 euros. The proceeds will be used to support ornitho.pl. If you are interested in purchasing it, you can also contact ornitho@dda-web.de.

As part of the data recording for the second Atlas of Breeding Birds in Germany (ADEBAR 2), the use of the ‘tracking function’ to record routes has increased significantly. This information is very helpful for observers, as it gives them an impression of which areas of the atlas squares have already been sufficiently covered. For the evaluation of the data, however, the route taken is also an important piece of information for estimating population density (distance sampling).

Unfortunately, in practice it turned out that some tracks were interrupted or only partial sections were recorded. Our developers have invested a lot of time in finding the cause of these problems. The reasons are related to certain (default) settings, which also vary from manufacturer to manufacturer.

Many manufacturers of Android phones use very strict battery optimisation guidelines. This goes so far that even services that are currently in use are sometimes switched off. This behaviour affects applications that rely on permanent background functions, including GPS tracking. However, these optimisations can be disabled in the smartphone settings. Below you will find device-specific instructions to help you configure your device correctly and keep background services stable.

We hope that these instructions will help you to save your distance/route more reliably and completely in future.

Am Samstag, dem 29.03. von 11:00 bis 14:00 Uhr, möchten wir mit Ihnen den Auftakt unseres Gemeinschaftsprojekts ADEBAR 2 feiern. Dazu laden wir Sie zu einem spannenden Programm mit Grußworten und vier kurzweiligen Vorträgen ein. Die Vorträge dienen dazu, Sie für die Kartierungen einzustimmen, ein vorläufiges Resümee bereits durchgeführter Kartierungen und der gestarteten Saison zu ziehen sowie den ersten Erfahrungsberichten zu lauschen.

Nach einer offiziellen Begrüßung durch den Projektträger und die Förderer von ADEBAR 2 freuen wir uns besonders, Johanna Romberg als Gastrednerin begrüßen zu können. Die Journalistin, Autorin, MhB- und jetzt selbstverständlich auch ADEBAR-Kartiererin, ist Ihnen vielleicht durch ihre Mitarbeit bei den „Flugbegleitern“ der Riffreporter oder durch ihr Buch „Federnlesen – vom Glück, Vögel zu beobachten“ (2018) bekannt. In ihrem Vortrag: „Im Frühtau zum Feldschwirl - Was Vogelzählen zum Abenteuer macht“ schildert sie die Freude und Herausforderungen von Vogelkartierungen und nimmt uns auf ihre ersten ADEBAR-Begehungen mit.

Neben dem aktuellen Stand zu Methode und Technik rund um die Kartierungen, die der fachliche Projektkoordinator Jonas Brüggeshemke präsentiert, freuen wir uns auf die ersten Erfahrungsberichte aus Hessen von Fabian Hirschauer und Stefan Stübing sowie auf Markus Ritz & Winfried Nachtigall, die von den bereits erfolgten erfolgreichen Brutvogelkartierungen in Sachsen berichten.

Im Anschluss an die Redebeiträge wird in moderierten Kleingruppen eine ADEBAR-Sprechstunde angeboten.

In the first two weeks of March, ornitho.de received almost 700,000 observations. This represents an increase of almost 20% over the same period last year, which is not least due to the successful launch of the ADEBAR project. At the same time, many bird monitoring programmes are starting the new season.

As you know, you can't make an omelette without breaking eggs. The sunny start to the breeding season, coupled with updates, led to a few glitches, for which we apologise. At times, it took hours for observations transferred from the NaturaList app to become visible on the portal. The website sometimes ran so slowly that data entry was almost impossible. Finally, at the weekend, numerous observations were not assigned to a detailed location, but only to a central point in the municipality. The latter meant that data from observation lists were sometimes too far away from the reference point and were automatically marked as such.

The problems with the transfer and the speed of the portal have now been fixed. Ornitho.de is running smoothly again and data reported via the app are usually available on the portal within a short time. The problem of incorrect location assignment was also fixed after a few hours. The data that was only assigned to the centre of a municipality (technically as a kind of emergency anchor) due to the error will be corrected automatically in the near future. This also applies to messages that may now be marked with a yellow spanner indicating that ‘the observation is too far away from the reference area of the observation list and should be checked.’ If you are affected by the problems mentioned, you do not need to take any action. Your point locations are also stored correctly, so there is no loss of information.

We apologise for any inconvenience and hope you have exciting observations during the spring of 2025!

ornitho.de and ornitho.lu have been offering a new, revised interface since the end of October 2024. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the large amount of feedback we have received. Almost 700 messages were sent via the feedback system using the ‘bug button’ in the header.

In addition to a lot of praise for a better overview, utilisation of the entire screen area and easier operation of mobile devices, there was also criticism, of course. This is to be expected with every change, but in many cases the feedback was very constructive and therefore helpful for us. A few ‘teething troubles’ were already resolved in the first few days after the release. Some purely visual adjustments have also been made since then (e.g. icons replaced) and pages that had not yet been converted to the responsive design at the beginning have now been changed.

Most recently, by popular request, we have moved the menus ‘All my data’ and ‘My species list’ to the ‘Participate!’ section. This way, your own contributions can be found next to each other to a large extent and hopefully the menu structure is even more intuitive.

We would also like to take this opportunity to share a few tips and tricks with you that we think will make using the new version easier:

1. Observation overviews: The former menus ‘Last 2 days’ etc. were missed by many users. These have been summarised in the restructuring of the menu and can now be found (with reports from the last 5 days) under ‘News’ > ‘Recent observations’. The observations displayed there are based on your personal settings and can be customised.
2. Zoom level: The variation in the screens used is enormous and ornitho.de/lu cannot be configured ideally for all circumstances. However, you can intervene yourself using the browser's zoom level and set the page to 90%, for example. To do this, press the Ctrl key and scroll with the mouse wheel, or press the Ctrl key and use the + or - keys to change the zoom level. Alternatively, you can also set this in your browser's settings. The selected zoom level will be saved and will only apply to ornitho.de/lu. Other websites you visit will remain unchanged.
3. Ctrl key: The Ctrl key can be used to open content in a new tab. This is very helpful, for example, if you want to view several observations in succession in the detailed view. If you hold down this key while clicking on the ‘notepad symbol’, a new tab will open instead of the ‘pop-up window’ that has been used on the page up to now.
4. ‘X’ button: Detailed views of observations, details of place names and other users' business cards now open in a kind of “pop-up window” within the page. However, to return to the place on the page where you were before closing a detailed view, the window must be closed using the ‘X’ button at the top right of the window – not using the ‘Back’ button of the browser or device.

We hope that these tips will make it even easier for you to use the new interface. We are optimistic that even our critics will gradually get used to the new design and recognise its advantages. We are also working with the development team to implement further improvements, such as localising the photos on the home page. Suggestions for improvement are still welcome via the feedback button at the top of the page!

Identifying the age of a bird is done according to the so-called calendar-years. With the turn of the year, birds hatched in 2024 no longer belong to the first calendar-year and are therefore no longer stated as this year's birds. They are now referred to as second calendar-year birds or as birds of the previous year. Birds hatched in 2023 are now in their 3rd calendar-year and so forth. We ask you to please bear that in mind when aging birds.

Ornitho.de and ornitho.lu went online on 30 October 2011 and have developed well since then. Many enhancements have been implemented since then, but visually they have remained almost identical since day 1. To mark their 13th birthday, both portals were given a new technical basis: They are now ‘responsive’, i.e. the interface adapts to the screen size. Ornitho.de and ornitho.lu can now be used on large screens as well as on smartphones and tablets. We have also taken this opportunity to modernise the look and structure of ornitho.de and ornitho.lu.

With the changeover, we have also significantly streamlined the menu structure: in future, there will only be 6 main menu items, and several submenus will be clearer (and therefore easier to use on small screens) thanks to the changeover to ‘tiles’. We hope that this will make navigation more intuitive in future and that some content - such as the many exciting statistics - will be easier to access from now on. Several menu items will be redirected to the DDA website to avoid duplicate structures.

You can switch to the new interface via a button at the top of the page - and back again (via the "Your oppinion matters!"-button), as we will be running both versions in parallel for a few months. You can use the comments function to give us feedback and make suggestions for improvement.

Das Brutgebiet des Mornellregenpfeifers liegt in den Fjällflächen und Tundren von Skandinavien bis Ostsibirien. Die europäischen Brutvögel überwintern in Nordafrika und überqueren Europa auf dem Zug in sehr engen Zeitfenstern. Viele Vögel führen dabei vermutlich einen Nonstopzug durch, ein gewisser Teil rastet allerdings regelmäßig an meist traditionellen Rastplätzen. Seit 2011 rufen wir zur gezielten Suche nach Mornellregenpfeifern während des zeitlich eng begrenzten Durchzugfensters von Mitte August bis Mitte September auf. Die zahlreichen Meldungen vor allem über ornitho ergaben den wohl bundesweit bislang besten Überblick über die Rastvorkommen. Dank der Differenzierung vieler Individuen in Alt- und Jungvögel können der jährilche Jungvogelanteil berechnet und so Rückschlüsse auf den Bruterfolg gezogen werden. Die Ergebnisse wurden in den vergangenen Jahren in „Der Falke“ veröffentlicht. Diese Beiträge können Sie hier als pdf herunterladen. Wann?

Im Frühjahr zieht die Art in Deutschland in sehr kurzer Zeitspanne und nur geringer Zahl fast ausschließlich im Mai durch, vorjährige Mornells verbleiben wie viele andere Zugvögel meist im Winterquartier. Weit auffälliger ist der Durchzug im Herbst. Hier werden die meisten Individuen im Zeitraum 15. August bis 15. September beobachtet. Einzelne Vögel treten noch bis Oktober auf. Es gilt daher in diesen Wochen ganz gezielt geeignete Habitate zu kontrollieren! Aufgrund des Verhaltens der Vögel sind die Beobachtungsbedingungen am Morgen und Abend am besten. Zu dieser Zeit findet die Nahrungssuche statt, während sich im weiteren Tagesverlauf ruhende, bewegungslose Vögel oft der Entdeckung entziehen. Auch die Chance, gegen Abend abziehende bzw. morgens zur Rast einfallende Tiere oder deren kleinräumige Ortswechsel bei der Suche nach geeigneten Rastflächen zu beobachten, erhöht den Beobachtungserfolg deutlich.

Wo?

Während im Frühjahr vor allem küstennahe Bereiche bevorzugt werden, tauchen Mornellregenpfeifer im Herbst vermehrt an Rastplätzen im Binnenland auf. Bei den Gebieten handelt es sich in der Regel um weithin exponierte, sehr offene und damit an skandinavische Weiten erinnernde Flächen mit kurzer Vegetation. Wurden ursprünglich wohl vor allem Heiden und Brachen aufgesucht, sind heute abgeerntete Felder die Hauptrastplätze. Besonders regelmäßig gelingen Nachweise vor allem auf Ackerflächen auf kargen, windexponierten Hochflächen mit weiter Sicht in Abzugrichtung Süd und Südwest in großräumigen Agrarlandschaften, gerne im oberen Hangbereich an der Südwestflanke kleiner Hügel. Es sollte mindestens ein Stoppelsturz stattgefunden haben, unbearbeitete Getreidestoppeln werden offenbar gemieden. Große Vertikalstrukturen wirken sich negativ aus, wobei Einzelbäume und Erdaufschüttungen toleriert werden. Besonders lohnend kann die Suche direkt nach starken, großräumigen Regenschauern und Gewittern sein, wenn die von der Witterungslage zur „Notrast“ gezwungenen Vögel schnell wieder abziehen und dann besonders auffällig sind. Unter solchen Witterungsbedingungen werden manchmal auch Flächen zur Rast genutzt, die bei guter Witterung keine Beachtung finden, wie z.B. ebene, kleinere Ackerflächen in Waldrandnähe. Die momentan soweit bekannt größten und bedeutendsten Rastplätze für Mornellregenpfeifer in Deutschland sind die nordrhein-westfälische Hellwegbörde im Kreis Soest sowie das Maifeld im Kreis Mayen-Koblenz in Rheinland-Pfalz.

Wie?

Nur selten werden die gerade einmal amsel-großen Mornellregenpfeifer zufällig entdeckt. Erst das genaue Absuchen geeigneter Flächen mit Fernglas oder Spektiv führt in der Regel zum Erfolg. Die Art ist relativ leicht zu bestimmen und kaum mit anderen Arten zu verwechseln (Bestimmungshilfe [ PDF ]). An den Rastplätzen herrscht eine hohe Dynamik, viele Vögel verweilen nur kurz, so dass eine regelmäßige Kontrolle möglicher Rastgebiete mit Angabe des Altersverhältnisses wertvolle Zusatzinformationen zur Anzahl der insgesamt im Gebiet rastenden Vögel liefert. Auch die Kenntnis der Lautäußerungen kann daher hilfreich sein. Beim Abfliegen wird häufig ein trillerndes, für eine Limikole unerwartet tief-melancholisches „pjürrr“ (www.xeno-canto.org/species/Charadrius-morinellus)  geäußert. Mornellregenpfeifer rasten meist in artreinen Trupps, nur selten gemeinsam mit anderen Limikolen (z.B. Goldregenpfeifern). Im Rastgebiet verhalten sie sich in der Regel recht vertraut und verharren selbst auf wenige Meter Abstand. Besonders größere Trupps sind aber mitunter scheu und fliegen schon bei geringen Störungen auf. Wir möchten deshalb noch einmal ausdrücklich darauf hinweisen, dass jegliche Störungen zu vermeiden sind und der allgemeine Verhaltenskodex unbedingt zu beachten ist!

Bei der Meldung von Mornellregenpfeifern bitten wir um möglichst detaillierte Informationen zu:

• Beobachtungsort (bitte immer punktgenau eingeben)
• Uhrzeit (im Datumsfeld, z.B. 15.08.2024 12:00)
• Alter der Vögel (Bestimmungshilfe [ PDF ])
• Rasthabitat
• rastend oder ziehend (unter "Präzisierung der Beobachtung")
• Bitte auch Negativkontrollen melden!
  Wenn geeignet erscheinende oder in den vergangenen Jahren von Mornells aufgesuchte Flächen kontrolliert, aber keine Vögel gefunden wurden, bitte einen Bestand = 0 eintragen. Für die Interpretation der Verbreitungskarte und die Datenauswertung sind 0-Nachweise eine wichtige Information. Bitte geben Sie dabei den groben Zeitaufwand im Bemerkungsfeld an.

Gerne können Sie weitere Angaben (z.B. zum Verhalten) im Bemerkungsfeld machen oder Fotos der Vögel anfügen.
