New dead find tool for standardised recording of dead and injured birds

Life is fleeting and so it is completely normal for birds to die at some point. However, the causes of death are varied and, in addition to natural causes, many birds unfortunately fall victim to cars or window panes, wind turbines or power lines every year. Unfortunately, illegal persecution also continues to be an issue.

A dead bird report tool has been available in other European ornitho portals and therefore also in the ornitho app NaturaList for some time. This has now been revised and integrated into the ornitho.de/lu website as part of a project funded by the Ernst-Commentz-Stiftung. Birds found dead or injured can now be recorded in a standardised way with just a few clicks. Please make use of the new input options for such finds as far as possible!

When entering data via ornitho.de/lu, you can now select in the optional information that the bird was dead or injured and there is also a corresponding field in the input mask in the NaturaList app. In the next step, the new dead bird tool opens, which can be used to select the various causes. The five most common causes can be selected particularly quickly as direct links.

You can find a brief introduction to the new lost and found tool including an overview of the available categories under the menu "Reporting of dead birds".

We hope to be able to obtain helpful data for nature conservation in this way and would like to encourage you to make use of the new possibilities!

The ornitho.de and ornitho.lu team

PS: The information on dead finds already reported via NaturaList will be processed in the coming days and will then also be available in ornitho.de/lu.

Photo: Road traffic is a frequent cause of death for many bird species (here a tawny owl). In future, this can be specified very precisely. Photo: S. Urbaniak (ornitho.de), 15/05/2026.
