Identifying the age of a bird is done according to the so-called calendar-years. With the turn of the year, birds hatched in 2022 no longer belong to the first calendar-year and are therefore no longer stated as this year's birds. They are now referred to as second calendar-year birds or as birds of the previous year. Birds hatched in 2021 are now in their 3rd calendar-year and so forth. We ask you to please bear that in mind when aging birds.

Zu Zehntausenden sammeln sich derzeit die Kraniche in den Rastgebieten im Norden und Osten Deutschlands und treten bald ihren Zug in die Überwinterungsgebiete in Südwesteuropa an. Vor allem im Westen Deutschlands und in Luxemburg werden dann wieder die weithin hörbaren Rufe und beeindruckenden Zugformationen zu sehen sein. Viele Tausend Zug- und Rastbeobachtungen werden in dieser Zeit über ornitho.de und ornitho.lu gemeldet. Damit die gesammelten Daten später detailliert ausgewertet und für Naturschutzfragen eingesetzt werden können, bitten wir Sie um Folgendes:

• Melden Sie bitte möglichst jeden Zug- oder Rasttrupp separat.
• Geben Sie zu Ihren Zugbeobachtungen bitte immer eine Uhrzeit an. Diese können Sie auf ornitho direkt hinter dem Datum von Hand eingeben, z.B. 07.10.2019 09:18. In der App NaturaList wird die Uhrzeit automatisch angefügt.
• Falls Sie an Massenzugtagen für mehrere Stunden an einem Ort stehen und den Zug verfolgen, geben Sie neben der Gesamtsumme und der Anzahl an Trupps bitte den Erfassungszeitraum sowie für die Interpretation der Daten wichtige Informationen (z.B. Sichtweite) unter „Bemerkungen“ an.
• Bitte geben Sie bei Zugbeobachtungen immer eine Zugrichtung an. Diese können Sie auf ornitho im Feld „Präzisierung der Beobachtung“ auswählen. InNaturList können Sie diese Information unter „weitere Details“ ergänzen. Vielen Dank!
  Entsprechende Angaben im Bemerkungsfeld lassen sich nicht auswerten.
• Geben Sie Trupps rastender oder Nahrung suchender Kraniche bitte punktgenau ein. Geben Sie in ornitho unter „Präzisierung der Beobachtung“ bitte „rastend/ruhend“ oder „Nahrung suchend“ an, und vermerken Sie – sofern zutreffend und erkennbar – auch das (Rast)Habitat.
  InNaturList können Sie diese Information ebenfalls unter „weitere Details“ ergänzen.
• Alt- und Jungvögel lassen sich bei Kranichen sehr einfach unterscheiden. Falls Sie also etwas mehr Zeit haben, zählen Sie Alt- und Jungvögel getrennt aus und tragen die Informationen in den dafür vorgesehenen Feldern ein (bitte nicht im Bemerkungsfeld). Falls Sie nur einen Teil eines großen Trupps ausgezählt haben, geben Sie bitte die Gesamtanzahl und in den Detailangaben nur die Anzahl differenzierter Individuen an.
• Falls Sie Kraniche abends oder morgens am Schlafplatz gezählt haben, geben Sie in ornitho ebenfalls die Uhrzeit sowie unter „Präzisierung der Beobachtung“ bitte „Schlaf-/Sammelplatz“ an. InNaturList können Sie diese Information ebenfalls unter „weitere Details“ ergänzen.
• Diese Hinweise bezüglich der Rast gelten insbesondere auch für Gänse und Schwäne sowie weitere auf Feldern rastende / Nahrung suchende Vogelarten (z.B. Kiebitz, Goldregenpfeifer).

Mehrwert von Detailangaben

Die AG Kranichschutz Deutschland und der DDA arbeiten im Bereich der Datensammlung bei Kranichen eng zusammen. Die über ornitho gesammelten Informationen zum Brut-, Rast- und Zuggeschehen stehen der AG Kranichschutz für detaillierte Auswertungen zur Verfügung, die u.a. für den jährlichen Bericht "Das Kranichjahr" erstellt werden. Bitte geben Sie Ihre Beobachtungen deshalb nicht zusätzlich unter www.kraniche.de ein!

The mobile input of observations directly from the field is increasing more and more. In the meantime, about half of the data is received via the ornitho app "NaturaList". But there are a few things to keep in mind and it is important that the app is set up correctly. You can access the "Preferred settings" via the "Hamburger menu icon" and configure the app there. We would like to list some particularly important notes and settings below:

1. Report the position of the bird, not your own location!
When entering data, it is important to move the map so that the red pointer marks the location of the bird. Your own location (smiley) is irrelevant and only serves to facilitate orientation in the field within the app.

2. Select the correct species list!
The species list is a central element of the app, through which important options are controlled (e.g. map bases, projects, bird monitoring, additional information). It is therefore of great importance that the list from ornitho.de is selected for bird observations in Germany. Please check in the settings of the app under "Species list" that the list of the internet portal ornitho.de is selected.

3. Correct list of atlas codes!
Particularly important information can be obtained by assigning atlas codes. Even though the codes are internationally agreed, there are slight differences from country to country. To ensure that your observations can be correctly classified, it is important to select the 20-digit list in the app settings under "Choice of atlas codes". 4. Use map bases optimally!
We recommend using the map "TopPlusOpen" as default, alternatively "OpenStreetMap Live". The default can be set in the app settings under "Map". Should it ever be necessary to use an aerial photograph for a particularly precise location, the map layers can be easily changed during data entry via the "layers" symbol at the top left of the map (e.g. "Luftbild Deutschland"). Please do not choose any of the Google map layers, for two reasons: 1.) These cause costs for us, all others are free of charge (and often better)! This money can be put to much better use. 2.) There are plans to remove most of these from NaturaList soon.

Please take the time to check the above settings once and correct them if necessary. This will make the app easier to use, improve the quality of your data and help us to save costs. For many bird species breeding season has started already. They are busily singing and displaying, inspecting potential nesting sites and transporting nesting material. The way these birds behave tells us if they are possible, probable or definite breeders. In order to allow comparable and automated analyses, standardized breeding codes have been established consisting of 20 different categories. The code was developed by the European Ornithological Atlas Committee (EOAC) and thus is applicable throughout the whole of Europe.
For not overlooking to enter this important information, ornitho.de gives you an automatic reminder when submitting your bird observations during the breeding season. These codes are valuable information for compiling species specific breeding distribution maps. Their correct usage therefore is essential.

To make everyone aware of cases when stating breeding codes is reasonable and when it is not, we have put together the most important facts and information in our new menu option “Breeding codes and their application”.

As of today, completely revised statistics on ornitho.de and ornitho.lu provide information on the spatial and temporal occurrence, flock sizes and altitudinal distribution of the individual species. You can access these via the phenology symbol (bar chart) behind each observation as well as under the statistics on species by species.

The new species info system was made possible by financial support from the Ernst Commentz Foundation. Part of this project are also the new seasonal occurrence graphs on the homepage, which have appeared alternately with the distribution maps since St. Nicholas Day 2021. The basis for the new phenology graphics are the complete observation lists. These not only allow a more realistic representation of seasonal occurrence, but also comparisons between individual years or multi-year averages. The fortunately steadily increasing number of reporters is of no consequence.

Please contribute to the continuous improvement of the information on the seasonal occurrence of our birds by using the observation list function as often as possible.

After many envious glances at Android users, the time has finally come: the ornitho app NaturaList has also been available in the Apple App Store since this week. This means that iPhone users can now also record observations directly in the field without having to take the diversions for the beta test version. Already today, almost 50 % of the observations reach us via mobile devices - and the trend is rising rapidly.

The iOS version for Apple devices is currently a basic version for entering casual observations. The range of functions of NaturaList for the iPhone is limited compared to the Android version. In particular, an option to change entries and enter observation lists is still missing. Work is already underway to make these functions available for the iPhone as well.

The app is free in the basic version and for entering observations. Additional functions for querying observations near one's own location can be added as in-app purchases. With your contribution you directly support the further development and maintenance of the app, in three levels, depending on how much it is worth to you: as a "Basic" subscription (2.99 €/year), as a "Follower" subscription (4.99 €/year) or "Big Fan" subscription (10.49 €/year). The use of these functions is not necessary for reporting observations.

Ein besonderes Jahr 2021 neigt sich dem Ende zu. Die Corona-Pandemie hatte und hat das Leben leider weiter stärker im Griff, als wir uns dies vor 12 Monaten erhofft hatten. Ornihologische Präsenzveranstaltungen waren in den letzten Monaten Mangelware, dafür haben sich Online-Vorträge als gern gesehene Alternative etabliert. ornitho.de feierte im Oktober sein 10-jähriges Jubiläum im Rahmen einer Online-Tagung mit spannenden Präsentationen rund um das Portal (zu den Videos der Vortäge). An technischen Weiterentwicklungen konnte im Frühjahr 2021 ein neues ornitho-Infosystem über die Vogelwelt im Nationalpark Niedersächsisches Wattenmeer freigeschaltet werden. Wir freuen uns damit den Grundstein gelegt zu haben für hoffentlich weitere Anknüpfungspunkte, um die Daten von ornitho.de auch extern nutzbar und für die Öffentlichkeit verfügbar zu machen. Eine kleine, aber wichtige Erweiterung gab es auch für die Eingabe von Gelegenheitsbeobachtungen in der ornitho-App NaturaList: Über die Felder Präzisierung der Beobachtung bzw. Rasthabitat lassen sich seit einigen Monaten auch spezielle Zusatzinformationen, wie z.B. Angaben zur Zugrichtung durchziehender Vögel, direkt im Feld per Smartphone erfassen. Im Menü Publikationen finden Sie kostenlos verfügbare Beiträge zu den genannten Weiterentwicklungen sowie zahlreichen weiteren Publikationen, in die Daten des Portals eingeflossen sind.

Mehr als 9,5 Millionen Meldungen wurden 2021 zusammengetragen (2020 waren es 8,8 Mio.). Die Datenbank von ornitho.de/.lu umfasst damit inzwischen über 62 Millionen Vogelbeobachtungen. Auch die Zahl der registrierten Personen – von denen rund zwei Drittel auch selbst Beobachtungen beisteuern – stieg im vergangenen Jahr noch einmal deutlich an und umfasst inzwischen mehr als 38.000 Personen. 2021 kamen fast 5000 dazu und damit sogar noch einmal mehr als im Vorjahr.

Allen, die im zurückliegenden Jahr ornitho mit ihren Beobachtungen unterstützt haben, möchten wir für die große Unterstützung ganz herzlich danken! Die eingehenden Daten werden von rund 450 Regionalkoordinator:innen sowie Artspezialist:innen gesichtet, die bei Rückfragen auch als Ansprechpartner auf lokaler Ebene zur Verfügung stehen. Ihnen, wie auch den Mitgliedern der Steuerungsgruppen, gilt deshalb unser ganz besonderer Dank!
