Keep your eyes open when using identification apps!

Smartphones are now a constant companion for most people. The technical possibilities in the field of bird identification are also developing rapidly. While digital identification books that are always to hand are highly recommended, caution is advised when using direct identification aids, which usually work by transmitting photos or sound recordings.

During ongoing plausibility checks, our regional coordinators are increasingly confronted with cases in which such apps are "blindly" trusted, leading to obvious misidentifications. In some cases, a high level of certainty is suggested, but unfortunately the apps are still often wrong, especially when it comes to recognising short calls.

We do not wish to discourage the use of these apps as a matter of principle, as they certainly provide helpful support in expanding your own knowledge of species and will undoubtedly continue to gain in importance in the future. However, please always provide additional visual confirmation, especially for purely acoustic app determinations. This applies in particular to species whose calls or songs you were previously unfamiliar with. Identification using artificial intelligence should only ever be an aid and additional safeguard. If in doubt, please refrain from submitting a report to ornitho.

Thank you for your understanding!
